I am an artist working in Korean traditional folk art. My artworks are expressed modern themes and descriptions in a way of Korean traditional folk art.
As a Korean tradition folk artist, who is working in New York City, a major goal of my activity is to introduce Korean traditional folk art to the public in a simple and familiar method. In addition, I have tried to introduce and understand “Muk” to the public who are in lack of knowledge on it.
In the last couple of years, I introduced “Muk” in Korean folk arts through my painting series, “Color from Black”. Using a technique in the Korean folk art, which is detailing using sharp blushes, my pieces nicely show a good harmony between black from Muk and colors from natural substances.
My “Homage” series are continuously show the balance between black and colors. These pieces used motifs from Chochungdo by a famous women traditional folk artist, Shin Saimdang. I also used Korean traditional pattern for background to give more “traditional” Korean impressions, resulted in a harmony between modern “patterning” and traditional Korean folk culture.
I have held several workshops to introduce Korean traditional art to the public living in a “cultural melting pot”, New York City. By these workshops, I introduced the series, “between color and Black” . These workshops were very successful to get a positive opinion to hold one next year.
People who get exposed to my works through my exhibitions and workshops asked me more about Korea and our traditions. Thus I would like to tell more about wedding in Korea. “Time-Semantics of Korean wedding” is a project with 8 pieces. The three works meaning of wedding in Korea by using stuffs for a traditional Korean wedding ceremony.
While “Time-Semantics of Korean wedding” are telling more about the traditional wedding in Korea and its meaning to Korean women, “Day dreaming” and “winter wishes” are, as parts of this project, show gradual changes in meaning of “wedding” in Korea from past to current.
